From Black Friday to high school proms, what has the United Kingdom adopted from our transatlantic cousins?

One of the biggest seasonal we’ve taken from the USA, the notorious Black Friday is now on the horizon. With one in five Brits saving their Christmas shopping for Black Friday, Virginia Hayward has examined how this phenomenon migrated over to the UK, and which other traditions we’ve picked up along the way.

BLACK FRIDAY
In America, the term ‘Black Friday’ itself was first used to refer to the crash of the American gold market in 1869.

It wasn’t until 1924 that the practice of shopping on the day after Thanksgiving became popular. The department store Macy’s advertised their holiday sales for their New York store during their thanksgiving parade.

The term ‘Black Friday’ was specifically used in relation to the day after Thanksgiving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Police used the term to refer to the crowds and traffic caused by holiday shopping and football game. By the 1960s, newspapers were using the term when referring to large crowds of shoppers.

In the UK, the term ‘Black Friday’ was originally used by the emergency services, when referring to the final Friday before Christmas, when people went out drinking after finishing work – giving the emergency services an increased workload.

In 2010, Black Friday sales were first adopted in the UK by Amazon. Then in 2013, ASDA – owned by American supermarket giant Walmart – offered ‘earth-shattering deals’ on televisions and laptops; the response caused crowds to wrestle to the checkouts, making newspaper headlines. That same year, police were called to at least seven Tesco stores due to Black Friday fights, with one woman suffering minor injuries when a television fell on her.

By 2014, more UK stores had adopted Black Friday sales, including John Lewis, Argos and Very.co.uk. More fights erupted during Black Friday that year, with police called to UK stores to deal with threatening customers, crowd control issues and violence.

By 2015, ASDA had chosen not to take part in Black Friday. The CEO at the time, Andy Clarke commented:

“This year customers have told us loud and clear that they don’t want to be held hostage to a day or two of sales.”

By 2016, more than £2.9 billion was spent in the UK on Black Friday, with a total of £1.23 billion spent online. Black Friday spend in 2017 was up by 10% compared to the last four years, with 14.8 million Brits (35.7%) avoiding spending money on clothes, electronics, appliances and furniture until Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Now we’ve reached 2018, 1 in 5 people plan to do Christmas shopping over Black Friday weekend.

CHILD BEAUTY PAGEANTS

Child beauty pageants began in the USA as ‘Better Baby‘ contests, measuring the health of babies through a number of factors, including height and weight, as well as more personality-based characteristics, like attention span and disposition.

Then followed the first official child beauty pageant in 1961, at Palisades Amusement Park in New Jersey. Named ‘Little Miss America’, it was held weekly throughout the summer, over 10 years, until 1971.

Following this, more regional child beauty pageants started around America, which conformed more to the formula of adult beauty pageants; categories included talents and party-wear.

Child beauty pageants gained in popularity in the UK with the US television show Toddlers and Tiaras, a reality programme showcasing the world of child beauty pageants, following a group of competitors and their pushy parents.

By 2012, the UK version of child beauty pageants, Miss Mini Princess UK, had arrived in Leicester. Open to children up to the age of 13, competitors were judged on physical beauty, as well as the talent they choose to present.

In 2018, beauty pageants are still prominent. As reported in The Metro newspaper in August, one British mother has spent £13,000 on beauty pageants for her seven-year-old daughter. This included entry costs, outfits, hair and makeup, alongside hotel and travel costs.

PROMS
Gone are the days of high school dances – the UK is now embracing the high school prom. Over the last 10-15 years, high school proms have been adopted by the UK, with 17 out of 20 senior schools holding events to high school milestones.

The increased interest can be attributed, according to The Guardian, to American high school TV shows that feature proms, such as Glee and High School Musical. Specific prom management companies now exist in the UK, with prom shows and exhibitions taking up a chunk of wedding fair exhibitions.

In fact, in 2016, the Express reported that the cost of UK high school proms had risen by 72% in five years. That year, parents were spending over £500 in order for their daughters to attend school dances, with money being spent on dresses, hair and nails, make-up, limousines and jewellery.

NEW CHRISTMAS AND HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS
It is not only new traditions that the UK is adopting from the US, existing UK holidays such as Christmas are becoming more Americanised each year.

The Independent also noticed a more Americanised Christmas for the UK, with journalist Katie Forster commenting on the introduction of the American eggnog to everyone’s festive drinks, ‘Father Christmas’ now being referred ‘Santa Claus’ and shopping centres becoming akin to winter wonderlands, showed the Americanisation of Christmas.

Halloween has had the same treatment, transitioning from modest turnip carving and apple bobbing turning into pumpkins, a weekend of partying and more lavish decorations year on year.

THANKSGIVING
Is there a chance that Thanksgiving will be the next American tradition the UK adopts?

A national holiday in America, Thanksgiving is held on the fourth Thursday in November. Known for kick-starting the holiday season, it originated as far back as 1621, when English pilgrims and Native Americans shared a feast to celebrate a good harvest season. It was declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1833, and since then has been synonymous with giving thanks, enjoying a thanksgiving feast, and spending time with loved ones.

In 2015, The Independent reported that one in six Brits celebrated thanksgiving. Research by Waitrose found they were finding an increased demand in traditional Thanksgiving ingredients, including pumpkin purée, sweet potato, turkey and cranberry sauce in November. Is this the next tradition to make it across the pond?

Black Friday is less than a week away and with many people hoping to get a lot of their Christmas shopping done in the event it’s important to plan in advance.

Top tips

Make a plan – Using a spreadsheet on your laptop or tablet make a plan you can access when you’re shopping on the high street or online – 15 minutes prep is a must for maximum savings.

Work out who you need to buy for and set a budget – This should include everyone from teachers, to next door neighbours and colleagues. Agree with friends and family who you’re buying for. You could suggest only getting something for the kids, going for drinks instead, doing secret santa or at least set a limit of how much you’ll spend on each other.

Create a wishlist and start deal hunting – Write down ideas of what you want to get everyone and start researching where to buy from. Check if it’s cheaper to buy online or instore and make sure you know what colour, type, version etc to save you time when you’re shopping on Black Friday.

Ways to pay – You don’t want to start January worrying about expensive debt. Look at how much you can realistically afford to spend this Christmas, set money aside for food, drink and the Christmas tree and then see how much you’ve got left over for gifts. Ideally you’d have cash saved so you don’t need to dip into your overdraft, if you haven’t and you need to borrow make sure you research the cheapest way of doing so. You could look into applying for an interest free credit card so you can spread the cost of Christmas over the year. Any other forms of borrowing may mean Christmas costs you more because of the added interest.

Pay the smart way – Paying for items over £100 on a credit card gives you Section 75 protection if things go wrong (getting a cashback or reward credit card will give you a little extra back too). Debit cards or PayPal also give you buyer protection although they’re not guaranteed by law. Use up gift vouchers and cash in loyalty points as this can net you significant savings and don’t forget to check for voucher codes online.

Factor in delivery costs – The cost of delivery could add a significant amount to your total so remember to factor this in when comparing prices online as it could mean delivery will make your bargain more expensive than other retailers at the check out. See if you can find a voucher for free delivery or use the sites that offer click and collect for free.

Don’t assume big retailers will be the cheapest – Independent websites can sometimes offer better deals but check they’re legit if you haven’t heard of them before. Make sure their site is secure, has a working UK customer service line, their address is registered as a business on Google and has good reviews on ReviewCentre or TrustPilot. These are all indicators of whether or not a website is genuine or scamming you for your money.

Check refund windows – Buying on Black Friday can be a great way to save but some retailers will only allow refunds on non-faulty goods for a fixed amount of time (often 28 days). If you’re not sure whether you’ll need to change a gift (because it might be the wrong size etc) bear this in mind.

How to survive the craziest shopping day of the year

20 November 2018: On Friday, 23 November, South African consumers will start queuing at the break of dawn and online shoppers will be glued to their computer screens as the annual shopping craze begins. According to the 2018 Black Friday survey conducted by My Broadband, 81% of those surveyed said they are planning to shop on Black Friday this year, with the majority revealing that they are planning to spend less than R5 000.

“The problem is that you can easily get carried away with all the deals on offer, says John Manyike, Head of Financial Education at Old Mutual. “There’s risk of overspending and buying items you don’t really need unless you arm yourself with a strict Black Friday budget.”

According to a recent study by World Wide Worx, online shopping makes up only 1.4% of total retail revenue in South Africa, significantly less than the global figure of 13%. This highlights the persistency of South Africa’s shopping mall culture. “We tend to rely on malls for entertainment, retail and social interaction, especially during the festive season. For many, Black Friday is the start of the end-of-year spending spree,” says Manyike.

He warns that consumers need to shop with caution, and that proper planning and budgeting is important to avoid unnecessary and spiralling debt.

Manyike offers these practical tips on how to stay out of trouble on Black Friday:

1. Make a shopping list

Making a list with only necessary items before the sales start will help you to focus on what you need when looking out for discounts. It is very easy to be tempted on the day – make sure you avoid impulse purchases and stick to your list!

2. Set clear budgets and stick to them

Budgeting is essential to avoid overspending. But having a budget and then not sticking to it is pointless, so it’s important to be disciplined. To avoid disappointment, make sure your budget is realistic. If you can’t afford a Black Friday budget, rather avoid temptation and stay away from the shopping malls on that day.

3. Look out for affordable gifts

With the festive season right around the corner and ‘JanuWorry’ fast approaching too, you can get a head-start and save some money on gift and back-to-school shopping. Again, be smart about what you’re buying and know what you’re looking for.

4. Think ahead

Depending on your priorities, Black Friday is a good opportunity to buy non-perishable household items that you know you will always need and that won’t go off. Stocking up on cleaning products and toiletries while they’re on discount, for example, is not a bad idea. It can save you money and reduce your future monthly spending.

5. Avoid using credit

Keep in mind that while buying on credit allows you to get the item instantly, you will end up paying more in interest over time, possibly even cancelling out the discount and causing a lot of financial distress in the future.

6. Be alert

Whether or not you are shopping on Black Friday, always monitor your sms notifications and report any suspicious transactions to your bank immediately as fraudsters are also shopping on Black Friday. Don’t let them use your money. If you’re shopping online, make sure you are transacting on legitimate sites.

“With proper planning and self-discipline, bargain hunters can make the most of Black Friday deals without breaking the bank. But now is definitely the time to be cautious,” concludes Manyike.

Black Friday and the dangers of heavy handed discounting

London – 20.11.18. A multitude of stores are planning on cashing in on the Black Friday and Cyber Monday hype by launching their sales early. Retailers such as John Lewis have already slashed their prices.

The term “Black Friday” is believed to refer to the single day of the year when retail companies finally go “into the black” – make a profit after being “in the red” for much of the year.

It is predicted that shoppers will spend £1.5bn online on Black Friday alone[1], up 12pc on last year. Market research firm Globaldata expects combined in-store and online receipts will weigh in at £10.4bn across the whole week[2].

Discounting does not always have a positive impact on retailers. Research by online payment provider Klarna found that 53 per cent of the retailers surveyed say that sales are having an adverse effect on their profits[3], with 11 percent revealing that discounting cost them over 25,000 pounds throughout 2017. Also important to note that 63 per cent of customers don’t return to a retailer after purchasing an item discounted during Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Pini Yakuel, CEO of Optimove comments: “Once discount period ends, the customers attracted by them will stop coming. We have found that shoppers who make their first purchase from a brand over the discounting season are 19 percent less likely to return to make a second purchase, rather than someone who buys at any other time in the year. LONDON, 21 November 2018 – Half of all Brits (49.8%) would buy an engagement ring during the Black Friday sales or in other promotions, research by jewellery insurance provider Protect Your Bubble has revealed.

With more than a quarter (26%) of couples hoping to get engaged this winter, the research shines a light on the number of people looking to make potential savings on the ultimate token of love[1].

In fact, one in eight (13.3%) savvy sweethearts will be shopping for the perfect ring this Friday, as retailers brace for the frenzied Black Friday sales[2].

It appears the traditional American event has won over hearts across the Atlantic, with half of those surveyed (50.6%) confirming they actually wouldn’t mind if their partner bought them an engagement ring on Black Friday.

It comes despite previous research by Protect Your Bubble which revealed Brits were spending 89% more on engagement rings compared to the year before, with the average ring spend coming in at £1,483.

But millions of money-conscious Casanovas are set to keep their savings a secret, with the poll revealing a third (32.1%) are willing to conceal how much they spent on engagements rings for their fiancés.

However, consumers will be cautious when shopping around for a deal as four in 10 believe Black Friday is “just a chance for jewellers to take advantage of couples”.

The report highlights though that many Brits already have their wits about them, with a third (33.5%) believing that although the savings may be good, the event brings with it the opportunity for retailers to sell poor quality goods.

Perhaps more surprisingly, a quarter (24.7%) confirmed they would be perfectly willing to buy a ring off the internet — despite not having seen it in person — meaning the stakes are higher than ever for those looking to propose on a budget.

With Black Friday only days away, Skyscanner the global travel marketplace has delved into its extensive flight data to uncover insights into Black Friday flight deals. The findings (detailed in infographic below) highlight the cheapest time to book flights on Black Friday (based on 2017 data) was during the post lunch slump at 2pm, and the destination which saw the biggest savings was Lisbon, saving 5% off the average flight price, however further-flung Hong Kong also saw average savings of 4%¹.

Christmas is coming and online retailers are getting fat

Christmas is coming and many of us will be shopping online. But it’s not just the internet giants who will reap the rewards of the Festive Season. Many smaller retailers and individuals are benefitting by using the big-name platforms, such as Amazon and Ebay, to sell their goods. In fact, more than half of the products sold on Amazon worldwide in 2017 were from third-party sellers. [1]

So, how do you best protect yourself when shopping online, if you’re dealing with individual sellers?

Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Trading Standards have launched a campaign to raise awareness of using online marketplaces, such as on Amazon, GumTree and eBay. This is part of National Consumer Week, which starts on 26th November 2018, to coincide with Black Friday and Cyber Monday.[2]

Helen Dewdney, The Complaining Cow and author of How to Complain: The Essential Consumer Guide to Getting Refunds, Redress and Results! provides some tips on what consumers need to know when they shop from a business through a marketplace.

1) Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, consumers have 14 days cooling off period for changing their minds. There are some exceptions to this, such as bespoke items. Whether or not return postage has to be paid depends on the trader’s terms and conditions. If the item is faulty you should receive the full cost of any postage paid for sending the item to you and for returning it.

2) For any complaint you will need to go through the platform’s process for complaining to an external seller. You may also find that the platform gives you additional protection.

3) The Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that items must be of satisfactory quality, as described, fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time. You can return any items if they do not meet any of these requirements. You do not have to pay return postage in this instance.

4) If you are buying from an individual and not a business then the item needs only to be “as described”.

5) If you paid extra for a dated/timed delivery and it does not arrive on time you are entitled to a full refund of the extra cost.

6) Goods must be delivered within the time frame agreed with the seller. If one hasn’t been agreed (you have agreed a time frame if the listing supplies a time frame) the seller must deliver ‘without undue delay’ and at the very latest not more than 30 days from the day after the contract is made. After this time you are entitled to a full refund.

7) Check where the item is being sent from! You will have the equivalent consumer rights if ordered from within the EU but not if it is ordered from outside the EU.

8) Use a payment system, such as PayPal, when purchasing items. This will give you cover if anything goes wrong with the purchase.

9) If the item is over £100 (and under £30,000) and you purchase the item on a credit card, you have a right to be refunded via the credit card company if you make a claim within 6 years (5 in Scotland), using Section 75A of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

10) Completing a credit card transaction through a third party payment service means that the credit card provider and the seller are no longer in a direct relationship, so are not equally liable. So, you do not have the credit card cover if you use a third-party payment service such as PayPal, Amazon Marketplace, Worldpay and Google Checkout.
