2021 is the year to focus on optimizing, not overhauling, nutrition Super-Nutritionist Amanda Hamilton outlines how we can make the most of superfoods to support our body’s immune system

As we head towards the long-awaited summer of 2021, more than ever many of us are looking to make healthy changes to our routines that support our bodies, boost our immunity and grant better all-over wellness. After prolonged lockdown periods, with more time spent at home, the closure of gyms and increased anxiety, it has been important to set realistic goals, rather than seeking to change negative aspects of our lives overnight, and making steady positive lifestyle changes which we stick to.

Whilst it is vital to maintain a healthy diet year round, now more than ever our bodies are in need of the extra support that superfoods can give us. According to the Medical Research Council, the average human inhales a staggering one hundred million viruses on a daily basis[1]. Our immune system acts as a defense mechanism to these germs, effectively responding to curb their detrimental impact. It has never been more important to keep this inner security guard in optimum condition, and diet can offer the immune system a significant helping hand.

Google Trends data showed that as Covid swept the UK, searches for ‘food’ and ‘immune system’ rose by 670%, showing a gap in consumer knowledge surrounding how we get the best nutrients to support wellness and fight off bacteria. When making new habits, you’re more likely to stick to them by adding them to an existing part of your routine, so adding superfoods to your morning oats or switching your smoothie’s protein powder for a superfood fortified alternative will help to keep you on track.

As one of the UK’s top five “Super-Nutritionist’s”, Amanda Hamilton has compiled her recommendation on the best superfoods to add to boost immunity this year in the easiest way possible.

“Whilst “superfoods” isn’t a medical term, it’s a useful way to highlight which ingredients are especially nutrient dense, particularly helpful when so many of us are trying to look after our health in busy and stressful times.”

“I’m a huge fan of acai, not only for the taste but because it scores low on the GI index, so it is ideal for those people managing blood sugar or simply looking to curb cravings. It is also rich in anthocyanins, plant compounds that give acai its deep purple colour and act as antioxidants in the body. It’s often found only in sweetened acai bowls, but for the real benefits, have it without the sugar! It can be prohibitively expensive to buy fresh so much more practical to buy as part of a powered blend.”

“Turmeric was a key nutrition trend of 2020 and it’s set to continue, for good reason. Turmeric and especially its most active compound curcumin is considered to be potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The taste isn’t for everyone so it is ideal when paired with flavours such as vanilla. Bioglan Superfoods’ digestive boost mixes turmeric and vanilla alongside a gut friendly mix of probiotics, nettle leaf, dandelion, ginger and added calcium.”

Each of the Bioglan Superfoods formulas have been carefully crafted to harness the benefits of their chosen ingredients, with the Superberries powder containing a whole host of antioxidant-rich super food ingredients blended to provide both a convenient and tasty product to strengthen our fragile immune systems, offering our bodies the TLC they deserve.
