Most Haunted Gin in the UK… Let Loose for Halloween!

If ghosts and ghouls are your thing, Hooting Owl’s limited edition haunted gin is sure to get you in the spirit this Halloween.

The gin magicians at Hooting Owl have released a limited edition ‘haunted’ Blackcurrant & Liquorice Gin, which has been distilled in what is thought to be the most haunted distillery in the UK.

The Where Ghosts Walk (WGW) Batalicious Gin, has been distilled under the watchful eye of a benevolent flame-haired former landlord and stored in a locked room with the resident panicked paranormal presence.

Barmby Moor House, situated in a rural village on the York to Hull trunk road, has been the headquarters of the Hooting Owl Distillery and home to craft distiller, Dominic M’Benga, since it was founded in 2018. In its previous life, the building was a public house and historic coaching inn and the regular, ominous night time activity on site has been attributed to the centuries of colourful landlords and patrons that have passed through its doors.

The establishment attracted its fair share of trade during the 1800s, and it seems some guests are less than keen to leave! The outbuildings, where the current copper stills are housed, are reported to be particularly lively at night, with whispering voices and footsteps regularly heard across the old Yorkshire stone floors, and the distillery isn’t short on spooky sightings.

Said to be the ghost of a former landlord called Joseph, a red-haired apparition regularly emerges around the distillery. Old Joe, as he’s fondly referred to, often paces through the distillery as though making checks, paying particular interest to the distillery’s artisan gin making. He will flash a wry, cheeky smile at anyone who has the pleasure of making his acquaintance, before disappearing into thin air.

More chillingly, the spectre of the young Barmby Coachman can often be seen tramping back and forth and murmuring incoherently. The man is believed to have left his tired horses at the inn after changing them during a gruelling winter journey over ‘The Black Moor’ from York. Having lost his life in a duel of love before he

could return, he is said to frantically search one of the rooms at Barmby Moor House, having come back to claim his horses.

In what is now a storeroom, the Barmby Coachman occupies the most haunted part of the distillery, plagued by disruptive paranormal activity, the room is used to store the Blackcurrant & Liquorice Gin.

Dom says, “If there’s a more haunted distillery in the UK I haven’t heard of it! It can get exceptionally eerie at night in that room, so it seemed like the obvious place to store the Halloween gin, although the bottles do seem to have a habit of moving around!”

The gin recipe, inspired by the sweet flavours Dom remembers from his childhood Halloween Trick or Treating days, joins the Hooting Owl range for a limited time and only a small number of bottles have been distilled. Available in a black etched bottle, it’s recommended that the gin is simply served on its own with crushed ice or paired with coke for a touch of extra fizz.

“All Hooting Owl’s flavours are inspired by things that mean something to us, like the region, our story or the history of the house. If there was ever a haunted gin, this is it! Not only has the gin been distilled under the watchful eye of Old Joe, we also chose to store it in the most haunted part of the distillery, even though none of us like to have to go in there too often. Hence it being limited edition!”

At that time of the year when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest, are you brave enough to try the UK’s most haunted gin?

WGW Batalicious Blackcurrant & Liquorice Gin has a little extra spirit in every bottle and can be ordered online through the Hooting Owl website, while stocks (and Hooting Owl’s nerves) last!

A new book from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh extols botanical medicine and herbal remedy making

The practice of referencing and using nature to create remedies, recipes and therapeutic preparations has been around for thousands of years. Over time, our knowledge of the more traditional ‘green pharmacy’ of this sort has diminished. Yet today herbology, the study of herbs, is enjoying a renaissance as reconnecting with nature and sustainability surges.
To coincide with this renaissance, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh will publish Herbology – A Physic Garden Pharmacy, a beautiful, hard-back book filled with natural remedies and recipes, and showcasing the best practices on gathering ingredients and safely preparing them. The book, written by herbologist Catherine Conway Payne, will publish on October 31.
Much more than a recipe and remedy book, Herbology is also a history of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, a place where medicinal plants have been grown for hundreds of years, for the benefit of the medical profession and their patients.

The book references four other publications which date from the origins of the Garden in the 17th century. One, the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia (1699), was discovered in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Originally published in Latin, the contents of the Pharmacopoeia have remained relatively inaccessible to most for over 300 years.

However – with the kind assistance of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the dedicated work of one research associate from the Garden, Robert Mill – the work in its entirety has now been translated into English; several extracts of which are being shared, for the first time, within the pages of this book.

Author Catherine Conway-Payne said, “It was an absolute joy to delve in to the Pharmacopoeia and discover which medicinal plants were being grown in Edinburgh during the latter part of the 17th century, which may be regarded as something of a golden age of herbalism. Then, the worlds of plants and medicine were closely aligned and it has been fascinating to find out that some recipes have not changed at all and that others contained extraordinary ingredients such as powdered toad, mouse droppings and even spider’s webs. Readers of Herbology will be relieved that our modern-day holistic formulations have omitted these from their list of ingredients.”

There are many precious botanicals within the pages of Herbology – among them nettle, dandelion, wild garlic and winter blooming witch hazel. Organised by the seasons, the book is filled with recipes and remedies and readers will join Catherine on a journey into ‘green pharmacy’ making special botanical creams, green ointments, herbal honeys, syrups, juices and teas along the way.

Catherine continued, “So much has been lost and forgotten over the years but we have been enjoying a real resurgence of interest in herbology recently. Our herbology courses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh have become incredibly popular and we are thrilled to now offer certifciates and diplomas in the subject.

“There has never been more desire to study all things ‘green’ and to learn how to work as one with nature, understand the precious therapeutic potentials of medicinal plants and nurture the earth that sustains them. The very nature of herbology is so expansive that once you are immersed within this facet of botanical learning you cannot help but become more aware of its inherently curative and dynamic spirit. For generations to come, perhaps this age in time might be viewed as a period of great holistic change and life sustaining initiative.”

Herbology is illustrated by botanical artist Jacqui Pestell and contains evocative photography by Kate Soltan. It is published by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh on October 31 and is available to pre-order now.

DIRTBUSTERS
THE ULTIMATE CLEANING GUIDE FOR SCARING AWAY THE SPOOKIEST OF STAINS

As Halloween comes creeping around the corner, and the trick or treaters come out to play, sometimes the scariest part of Halloween is the very next morning, when the ghouls and ghosts of the night before become the stubborn stains left over from the messiest day of the year!

Spooky season may be a thrilling celebration of all things haunted and harrowing, but there is no denying that the most terrifying part of Halloween can be the next day with Brits having to transform from ‘Ghostbusters’ into ‘Dirtbusters’!

To combat this, the experts at cleaning and laundry brand, Dr. Beckmann, has come up with the top ten scariest stains you may experience this Halloween, and the best way to fright back quickly!

Dr. Beckmann spook-person, Chloe Baker said: “As fun as Halloween is, it usually comes with a whole host of stains making their way into our homes, ranging from fake blood to chocolate to gruesome gunk.

“So we’ve put together our top tips to help efficiently eradicate the spills and stains, and not allow the frights of Halloween to continue into the next day!

“Growing up, we all loved the treats that come with trick or treating but sweet snacks like chocolate and caramel can leave behind the most stubborn of stains.

“To treat these sticky spillages, take an ice cube and place it on the stain for an hour, then simply scrape off with a blunt knife. Then apply a specialist product, like Dr. Beckmann’s Stain Devils – Fat and Sauces onto the stain and leave to set for just three minutes, before dabbing away at the mark as it disappears.

“Who doesn’t love carving pumpkins at Halloween? Sadly, we don’t love the aftermath anywhere near as much! When treating pumpkin stains on your clothes, it is always best to blot the damaged fabric with a damp cloth before preparing to wash the item, then use a specialised stain remover to help treat and eliminate the blemish.

“Fake blood is a staple for spooky season. However, removing the inevitable mess that comes with fake blood is more terrifying than the blood itself! If you get it on your clothes, make sure to smother the stain in cold water as soon as possible, then proceed to rub in lemon juice. Finish by popping your clothes into the washing machine, with one of Dr. Beckmann’s Magic Leaves Laundry Detergent Sheets for that super fresh feel.

“And it’s not just the kids that make mess, us adults can be just as bad! Boozy Halloween parties can often lead to spillages, and none are scarier than the dreaded red wine spills. In this case, you need to act quickly, blot the alcohol with a cloth until the stain has been absorbed, then use a sponge and some cold water to follow. If the stain has slivered its way onto sofas or even the curtains, Dr. Beckmann’s Upholstery Stain Remover is always handy to have in the cupboard.

“We hope these top tips will help everybody eradicate those franken-stains and enjoy a stress-free Halloween. There is a wide range of products on offer from stain removers to laundry whiteners, enabling your home and clothes to be scarily fresh in no time!”

moulds. Whilst it is key for the final look, texture and flavours of the cheese it can also encourage
a powerful aroma. That said, for many washed-rind cheeses, the taste is much less pronounced
than the smell would lead you to believe and there are delicious flavours to discover. Here we
pick those cheeses infamous for their funk and explain why it’s worth overcoming the initial
impressions.

Pont l’Évêque is one of Normandy’s oldest cheeses. Whilst the strong smell is likened to horse
manure, its taste is thankfully much milder. The cheese has a soft texture, a slightly sticky rind and
the pleasing flavours of warm milk and hazelnut.

With an aroma likened to stinky feet it is illegal to carry Époisses on public transport, but those
who can get past the smell will be rewarded. The rind becomes sticky and begins to glisten as it is
regularly washed with a mixture of salt water and Marc de Bourgogne during production.

Despite the cheese being created by Benedictine monks in the East of France, the smell of Munster is hellish and evocative of a witch who hasn’t washed for a long time. Considered to be a
strong cheese due to its smell, it is relatively mild on the palate. However its orange-pink rind is
thin, smooth and damp, like snail slime.

Vieux-Boulogne from Hauts de France was scientifically proven to be the world’s smelliest cheese
by using an ‘electronic nose’ and a panel of human testers. Its signature stench – a cloying blend
of rotten leeks and farmyard pong – remains unmatched coming, as it does, from a rind soaked in
beer for up to nine weeks. It isn’t for the faint hearted but those who persevere will find a smooth
and pleasantly mellow cheese behind its rancid rind.

Produced in the same area, the Maroilles, is presented as the finest of strong cheeses. Don’t let
the smell of feet fool you. Its characteristic aroma is both powerful and persistent. However, its
taste is much less pronounced than the smell would lead one to think.

Reblochon, produced in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, has a rind with a distinct barnyard aroma that
would scare off a bat. But don’t be fooled by the smell: on the palate, it has a delicate, velvety
taste, enhanced by an exquisite hazelnut note.

If the smell of these cheeses doesn’t appeal, you can also come up with seasonal recipes making
the most of pumpkin and other gourd vegetables as cooking softens the fragrance. Try butternut
squash roasted with Munster or pumpkin gratin with Pont l’Evêque.

HOW TO BE THE MOST GRUESOME GUEST AT THIS YEAR’S HALLOWEEN PARTY
THE DUNGEONS SHARES ITS TOP TRICKS FOR A HAUNTING HALLOWEEN MAKEOVER
This October, The Blackpool Tower, York, and Edinburgh Dungeon’s most haunting occupant is emerging from the dark to share their wicked tricks to become the most gruesome guest at the Halloween party.
To ensure you’re guaranteed to scare this year, Katie Buchanan, Lead Actor at The Dungeons has revealed her fearsome five-step routine on how to become truly terrifying.
Step One: As pale as a ghost!
Katie: “The first thing I do when applying my make-up at The Dungeons is to make myself look as pale as possible. Use a white foundation to make it look like you’ve not seen the sun in years!”

Step Two: Become the undead!
Katie: “For step two, grab a brown eye shadow or contour and hollow out your eye sockets, temples, cheek bones and jaw line. You want to make yourself seem as gaunt, eerie and tiresome as possible.”

Step Three: Not for the faint-hearted
Katie: “Next up, it’s time to prepare for the plague. You’ll need some red and purple colouring, for this you can use face paint of even lipstick to create little circles on your face for the base of buboes. The top tip from the original Plague Doctor himself is to smudge the circles out with your fingers to create the best illusion.”

Step Four: The dreaded buboes
Katie: “Following this, using eyelash glue, make some small bumps over the circles you have created and leave to dry – it’s that simple to look that hideous!”

Step Five: The fearsome finish!
Katie: “Finally, use eyeshadow or contour in the creases of your eyelids, smile lines and chin – but beware you will be transformed into a blood-curdling plague patient!”

This October, the Home of Halloween – The York, Edinburgh and The Blackpool Tower Dungeon – is taking things to the next level with its series of spooktacular shows!

The York Dungeon

A new book from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
extols botanical medicine and herbal remedy making

Catherine Conway-Payne is available for interview.

Tennis C Williams, the company behind The Rocket, noticed tennis bags haven’t evolved much since they were first introduced, with most tennis bags featuring two compartments — one for all their gear, no matter the size, and another specifically for their racquet. This might not seem like a big deal, but when you have to store used tennis balls and knee/elbow braces in the same compartment as your clean clothes, keeping them fresh is hard. Or, when you have to fish for smaller items like sunglasses, chapstick, athletic tape, etc., it’s distracting when you can’t find them. The Rocket aims to change all that with its smart pocket system and advanced material within key pockets to keep odors, mold, and mildew away.

Here are some of the features:
• It’s stylish and understated—no large, colorful logos.
• The exterior uses material that’s used in super-premium luggage and is abrasion-proof.
• It’s spacious and lightweight and features individual pockets for your racquets, larger gear, i.e., knee brace or laptop, clothes, shoes, drinks, medical items, and even a pocket specifically for your keys, wallet, and phone.
• Antimicrobial lining in wet pockets keeps sweaty/smelly items away from clean clothes/gear.
• Thermal lining in the racquet pocket and internal water bottle pocket keep things cool.

Jonathan Prescott, VP of E-Commerce at CouponBirds, shared his insights on Halloween Special Segment:

“During Halloween, British people dress up and attend parties, often wearing scary masks. There are many Halloween celebrations, such as:
Children will go to other people’s homes and knock on the door to ask for candy. This game is called trick or treat.

People also watch horror movies at home or in movie theaters with guests.
People will also make pumpkin lanterns, carve the faces of various ghosts on them, and finally light candles to drive away evil ghosts. According to a research, a quarter (25%) of Britons bought a pumpkin for Halloween in 2020.

According to CouponBirds’ research on Halloween in the past two years, Halloween element decorations such as candles, and decorative lights like spider web lights are popular products for Halloween. During Halloween, merchants in these categories will provide different discounts, such as Trick Or Treat, with a maximum discount of 38% and an average discount of 28%; decorations with a maximum discount of 33% and an average discount of 22%; Halloween costumes with a maximum discount of 50% and an average discount of 25%.

The holiday is approaching. You can check in advance whether your favorite merchants have started to offer Halloween discounts, buy the Halloween products you need, get involved in holiday preparations as early as possible, and enjoy the upcoming good times.”

Gothic Glamour: Embrace a luxurious Gothic theme with deep, rich colors like black, burgundy, and dark purple. Incorporate velvet upholstery, ornate candelabras, and heavy drapes. Add antique-looking mirrors and faux spiderwebs for an eerie touch.

Haunted Library: Transform a room into a spooky library with vintage books, old-fashioned candle holders, and dusty cobwebs. Use flickering LED candles to create an eerie atmosphere. You can even add a hidden corner with a life-sized skeleton reading a book.

Potion Lab: Set up a potion-making station in your kitchen or bar area. Display colorful liquids in glass jars with spooky labels, and use dry ice for a smoky, mystical effect. It’s a playful and Instagram-worthy addition to your Halloween décor.

Witchy Kitchen: Turn your kitchen into a witch’s lair. Hang broomsticks, cauldrons, and witch hats as decorations. Create a bewitching tablescape with black dishes, crystal balls, and eerie potion bottles as centerpieces.

Enchanted Forest: Bring the outdoors in with an enchanted forest theme. Decorate with artificial branches, moss, and fairy lights. Add whimsical elements like oversized mushrooms and magical creatures for a mystical ambiance.

Spooky Gallery Wall: Create a gallery wall with creepy, vintage Halloween artwork and portraits. You can find printable vintage Halloween images online to use as part of your gallery. Frame them in antique-style frames for added authenticity.

Glowing Eyes: Place cut-out glowing eyes in unexpected places like behind curtains or in dark corners. This simple yet effective trick adds an eerie vibe to your space.

Hope this helps, feel free to reach out if you have other questions.
