Every activity comes with its own mental challenges, from puzzling over golf to rugby.

But they all have one thing in common: mental focus and emotional fitness. Being able to concentrate, get into flow and excel at whatever you set your mind to – despite setbacks – is crucial for getting ahead in any field. While eliminating distractions and noise is very helpful to be able to centre yourself, there is an additional human aspect that has been making headlines: emotional intelligence, EQ. Research shows that EQ is actually a lot more important to success in the workplace and in relationships than IQ. With well-rounded emotional intelligence, people understand their own emotional reactions and that of others better and are able to respond accordingly. Even more important, they can regulate their own feelings, allowing themselves to reflect on WHY and HOW to act in stressful situations.

Say you are very nervous before a big game. A typical response to fear is anger, which may lead to you attacking an opponant in an aggressive way, resulting in a foul that hurts your team. But if you understand and know why you are acting the way you are, you have several different options that can help you manage the situation:

Our Italian summer garden is brimming under the warm Mediterranean sun. Eggplant, basil (we have lemon, licorice and cinnamon basil ), capers, cucumbers, lemons, beets, tomatoes and zucchini are just a sampling.

Did you know that zucchini are male or female and one cannot exist without the other. You can tell the blossoms apart because the male flowers have a single, long stamen covered with pollen, while the females have a stigma with multiple stems inside the blossom. As the zucchini plant grows, the female blossoms mature into a squash, while the male flowers (which fertilize the females ) simply remain a flower.

Botanically speaking, zucchinis are a prolific fruit that can be prepared in a variety of ways. In celebration of our summer harvest, we’re cooking-up paccheri & zucchini, our favorite, and sharing it with you!

Paccheri & Zucchini
Large Tube Pasta & Zucchini
Serves 4-6

Ingredients
1 small onion, finely chopped
4 medium size zucchini, cut into coin shapes
Extra virgin olive oil
Heavy cream (approximately 1/3 of a cup), to taste
1 fresh bunch of basil
300 g Paccheri pasta
Grated Parmigiano cheese, to taste
Sea salt and pepper, to taste

Method

In a large frying pan, heat a generous drizzle of olive oil and sauté the onion till golden brown. Add the zucchini and a generous amount of fresh basil, torn by hand. Salt to taste and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes over a very high heat. Add a little water and cook for a further 10 minutes over a medium heat.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil, add salt to taste, and cook the pasta until al dente. Save a cup of the pasta water and put to the side. When the pasta is cooked al dente (about 2 minutes before preferred taste), drain and add to the pan with the zucchini. As the pasta blends with the zucchini, add several generous swirls of heavy cream. Sauté and fold it togehter, adding a little of the pasta water if too dry. Turn the heat off, remove the pan from the stove and add the Parmesan cheese. Garnish with fresh basil and serve immediately.

How to assess if you have tight hips and quads

Running, walking and playing sports such as rugby requires both flexibility as well as strength in the hip and glute area.

Strong glute muscles are required to give you the power to push your body forward and maintain momentum when running . However if your hips and quads are tight, your glutes will not be able to fire as well as they should, in order to give the power required.

A certain amount of hip and quad flexibility and mobility is required for the hip to extend.

Pilates is a great form of exercise to help you stay strong in the glutes and also flexible in the hips. It is a great addition to weight and cardio training as it helps you keep a good balanced muscular system, which in turn prevents pain and also injury.

Other forms of exercise don’t often focus as much on balancing the muscular systems as Pilates. Pilates is used not only for rehabilitation of injuries but also prevention because it focuses a lot on the deep stabilizing muscles of the body (rotator cuff, transverse abdominis, vmo) as well as the big global mobilizing muscles (quads, glutes, biceps). Generally weight training focuses on the global muscles.

Today I will show you how to assess if you have tight quads and hips, which may be preventing you from getting the power you need, to run at your optimal level.

HIP EXTENSION TEST
Start by lying face down on your tummy.

You can rest your hands, face down under your forehead for comfort.

Keeping both hips on the floor, see if you can lift one leg off the floor while keeping it straight.

If you struggle to firstly keep the leg straight, and secondly not be able to lift the leg off the floor without lifting your hip, you need to work on improving your flexibility in the hip and quad of that leg.

The goal is to be able to extend the leg past the hip and keep it straight. This demonstrates good range of motion in the hip that is required to give you that running power.

Try this test on both legs.

We moved from home kitchen into a small workshop in February 2017. We have now successfully tested the market, with quarter on quarter increases in sales. Our sales model is 1) direct through our website and attending events; and 2) trade via retail stockists. Our chocolate is now stocked in 27 retail stores across Scotland, Wales and England; a figure growing each month.

Vision

Our vision is to make a significant impact on the fight against obesity by providing healthier chocolate. We are currently exploring funding opportunities and our 12 month goal is to establish a factory allowing increased production from 25kg to 200kg per week. This will allow us to increase sales within the UK and pursue export routes. Within 2 years we plan to sell throughout Europe and North America, and within 5 years worldwide. Importantly, our milk chocolate is lactose free, making it particularly attractive to Asian countries, where lactose-intolerance rates are 80 – 100%. Finally, innovation is at our core and we already have a number of novel “healthier” chocolate products ready for commercial production.

How good is our tap water really?

As conversations continue to build and research evolves surrounding the dangers of microplastics in our drinking water, the consumers attention will begin to shift from the dangers of bottled water, to start questioning how good and ultimately how safe is home tap water to drink? A survey conducted by The Organisation of Responsible Business (ORB) in 2017, found plastic microfibres in 83 percent of the tap water tested. Although much lower than bottled water, the issue of plastic particles entering various supply systems seems to be a problem that is only going to worsen over time. And with such stories emerging of microplastics invading all ‘clean’ water supplies, consumers are ultimately starting to question how good their water supply is, its potential impact on their health in the future and what can be done right now to make water taste great and be the very best quality it can be.

So, is there more to tap water than meet’s the eye?
Just because we cannot see contaminants in our drinking water doesn’t mean they’re not there. The water all of us drink can contain disinfectants, heavy metals, bacteria, cysts, rust and plastics. And this is even after being cleaned and authorised as drinkable at a water treatment plant – based on current testing standards. In the UK, individual water authorities treat our drinking water in different ways (for example some add fluoride, others don’t). However, the water that comes out of the tap has had to travel down many miles of pipes between the water treatment works and the kitchen tap. Chemicals, usually chlorine, must be added to the water to keep it fresh (but this affects the taste and odour) and there is always the possibility that it will pick up other contaminants along the way (possibly lead from pipes, which could still supply older properties).

Great taste without the waste
A quality water filter will remove the bad contaminants being discussed here and ensure that all essential minerals beneficial to health remain. The result is a great tasting, natural flavour, but many of the filtering jugs available on the market and common in the home for example, are not quite as efficient as many might think. Jugs can lose more than 50% of their filtration efficiency within just two weeks, therefore falling short of the expected filtration performance in removing chlorine and no match for the disinfectants, heavy metals, bacteria and plastic the user thought were being removed, but ultimately aren’t.

Christmas in July is the time of year when you get to reap the benefits of the festive season without having the classic family stresses or the added pressure of gifts. It’s about friends, fun and importantly, food!

The experts in kitchen and fridge organisation, Mitsubishi Electric Australia, have created a pre-party checklist to help you have the best Christmas in July event to date!

Jean-Marc Adele, Refrigeration Product Expert at Mitsubishi Electric, has this advice:

1. Get everyone involved and prepare them in advance
Although it may seem hospitable to provide for all of your guests, Christmas in July is a time for festive fun – without the stress – so get into relaxation mode and let your guests help out. Set up a group chat on social media and allocate everyone a dish, side or drink to bring. Encourage your guests to use the time of year as an excuse to cook with fresh produce that is generally unavailable or seasonally overpriced in December.

2. Stock up
Even when you’ve divvied out what everyone should bring, dinner parties can still be expensive. To avoid blowing your budget, stock up on items in advance. Smaller, non-perishable items (like stuffing – yum!) are ideal to add to your weekly shop. Keep an eye out for specials on more expensive cuts of meat too, as this is what the freezer was made for. A freezer drawer has the capacity for bulky items (like a whole bird) and features a top tray, which is ideal for storage and organisation of flat pack items such as meat packs.

3. Organise your fridge at least two days in advance
An unorganised fridge can be a major cause of stress when entertaining. Pay attention to the different areas of your fridge and utilize storage features such as adjustable shelves to maximise available space. Allocate sections of your fridge to particular items, ie. cooked meats at the bottom and desserts on top. If entertaining is a priority, consider upgrading to a fridge with French doors, with a wide shelf for storing large platters or leftovers.

4. Get creative with your atmosphere
It may not be the December 25, but that’s no reason to forget the festive sparkle. If you don’t have tinsels, baubles and a Christmas tree then why not get creative?! This should be fun after all and handmade decor always sparks conversation at this type of gathering. Why not create some additional atmosphere and pull out the mulled wine? The unique aroma shall spread throughout the house and add to the festive spirit.

5. Plan games in advance
Whereas most Aussies celebrate Christmas over a game of backyard cricket or other outdoor activities, some classic indoor activities make for a great ending to your Christmas in July party. By having a few games pre-prepared in advance, you’ll avoid the lull that can often appear once your guests have stuffed their face and polished off the mulled wine. Gather around a fire, roast some marshmallows and play some classic games with your guests such as Charades.

6. Save your leftovers!
If you find yourself with an abundance of delicious festive food left over, there’s no need to waste it. Ben Cohen has collagen boosting treatment to tackle his nose and skin head on

Retired rugby player Ben Cohen MBE, who was a member of the England national team which won the 2003 Rugby World Cup in May 2011, and latterly took part in Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1 and The Jump on Channel 4, has just had a collagen boosting treatment to his nose at the tail end of his sports career, once he was sure he would not be injured any further.

He explained his reason for treatment:

“The knocks you get in rugby are like controlled car crashes really! It depends whereabouts you take a bump. You try not to get hit in the face, but ultimately you can’t help that sometimes. I think during my career I had 2-3 nose bleeds from bumps a week, because you can’t help sometimes accidental knocks from elbows etc. I depressed my cheekbone quite badly, tackling someone incorrectly, I hit their hip.

I’ve also noticed my skin has been affected a lot by being out in the elements playing, with wind drying out my skin, and giving my sore areas, especially my nose. When my skin has been dry and sore in the past it has affected my confidence. I’m 40 this year, and the weather has taken its toll on my skin for sure.

Like so many people, I’ve had a side I prefer to have photograph taken, and looking back it’s been a self-conscious thing that I think is related to the way my nose hasn’t been quite symmetrical.

Helping the body to rebuild itself
