Wake up bright-eyed and bushy tailed
Sleep is precious. But for all the new mums out there, sleep is often an elusive commodity. In fact, during the first 4 months of their newborn’s life, a mum averages just 3.5 hours* of shut eye.
“Babies sleep a lot but it is usually in short bursts so as a mum, your sleep is often interrupted,” says GP and mum Dr Sophie Nelson. “Newborns wake to feed every 20 minutes to 2 hours which means mums rarely get the important REM sleep that starts 90 minutes into their sleep cycle. Fragmented sleep causes a significant decrease in deep sleep and this can be more difficult to cope with than getting 4 or 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep”.
