Experts reveal top tips for spotting a good tech deal this Black Friday

Last year, Black Friday was bigger than ever with a record 1,184 transactions per second between 1 – 2pm1. However, the hype around Black Friday can send many consumers into a buying frenzy, so how can you tell if you’re getting a good deal?

Experts at online smartphone retailer, Mobiles.co.uk, have revealed their top tips to spot great deals and prepare for the big day, to ensure you’re getting the best value.

1. Research products

As the sale season begins, it can be all too easy to spot a great deal on a product you may not be familiar with, then fail to read the reviews in a bid to check out before it sells out. Instead, look online a few days in advance and scope out the products you think you’ll want to grab a bargain on and do your homework. Andrew Cartledge, mobile expert at Mobiles.co.uk says: “Comparing brands and looking over customer reviews can ensure you will not be disappointed when the sales arrive.”

2. Look out for Price Guarantees

Some brands will post a ‘Price Lock’ or ‘Price Guarantee’ ahead of Black Friday. This lets you know that the price you see now is the best deal, so you don’t have to wait until Black Friday to place your order. With a Price Guarantee, you can spread out your shopping ahead of the big day, and still be sure you’re getting the best price a retailer will have to offer.

3. Look out for Price Matching

“Some retailers will match prices on Black Friday deals so it is always worth reading their policies as this may only cover specific retailers.” says Andrew.

4. Online accounts

Last year, many popular deals sold out quickly. Andrew says, “To prevent you from missing out it is worth setting up online accounts with your favourite retailers, securely saving your shipping and payment details to your account so you can complete purchases quickly once deals are live.”

He adds: “It’s also worth signing up to retailers’ newsletters as they tend to send their deals out ahead of time to people on their mailing list. Ensuring you know what deals will be available will make shopping even easier on the day.”

5. Create a wish list

Some websites let you create a wish list of all the things you want to buy. Andrew suggests:“Having a wish list prepared for Black Friday of the products you want to buy will make it easier when the prices drop, to ensure you’re not wasting time trawling through the other deals.”

6. Set your morning alarm

Start your Black Friday shopping earlier than ever. Some retailers start launching their deals days, even weeks before the actual day, so you might be in with the chance of grabbing an early deal. Keep an eye on your favourite retailers to ensure you know when their deals start.

7. Don’t forget Cyber Monday

Don’t worry if you didn’t get the products you wanted during Black Friday because there is always Cyber Monday to look forward to. Keep checking over the weekend and on the Monday for even more deals on the things you love.

Powers of persuasion: Is Black Friday just smoke and mirrors?

Hilary Stephenson at Sigma, a leading UX and design agency discusses dark UX and how the design community can prevent consumers falling into Black Friday traps

With the effects of the pandemic still being felt, Christmas shopping is going to look a little different this year. Research has found that 61% of Brits have shopped online more during the pandemic, and this increase is expected to continue adding £5.3billion to UK e-commerce sales, making it a £80billion industry.

The same research revealed that 89% of people said they will continue to shop online, and with Black Friday just around the corner, retailers are gearing up their sales and advertising efforts. Therefore, this year more than ever before there will be an even bigger opportunity for online retailers to set dark UX traps for their often unexpecting customers to fall into.

Dark UX patterns may not always be intentional on the part of the retailer, especially as so many stores have rushed to put their products online in the last six months to keep up with the market. Those who are new to the field may have inadvertently brought in dark patterns due to inexperience. Have they got the backend logistics to match the frontend offer or considered those with accessibility needs, for example?

With cash tighter this year to rising redundancy and the knock-on effects of the furlough scheme, retailers must take responsibility in creating honest and ethical e-commerce websites that are easy to use and avoid dark UX and deceptive design patterns.

With this in mind, Hilary Stephenson, at UX design agency, Sigma, will discuss how dark UX trends could affect the ecommerce industry this Black Friday.
