Dentist and internationally acclaimed ‘Bad Breath Guru’ Dr Harold Katz who has dedicated years of advanced clinical research in to the problems of bad breath, dry mouth and taste disorders. He is also the founder of the California Breath Clinics and The Breath Company range. Unlike any other high street brand, each of the products in THE BREATH CO range targets the bacterium living and multiplying on the tongue’s (and throat’s) surface that causes halitosis rather than masking the odour with powerful flavours; literally eliminating the problem. In fact, clinical tests of Dr. Katz’s patients treated with THE BREATH CO products repeatedly resulted in a complete elimination of over 98 per cent of the volatile sulphur compounds that cause bad breath.

Dr Harold Katz (also known as the ‘Bad Breath Guru’ in the US) acknowledges that for the many trying to lose a few extra pounds before their late summer getaway, then cutting back on carbohydrates, eating a high-protein diet, fasting, or even cutting out meat has probably crossed their minds. However, as well as not being the best long term weight loss plan, crash dieting, fasting, and low-carbohydrate diets can also have nasty side-effects, one of the most common of which is bad breath. The two most common types of bad breath as a result of dieting are; bad breath due to acetone caused by ketosis, or an excess of protein in the diet producing ammonia in the breath. It has also recently been found that a diet rich in meat and dairy products can actually boost dental health, as common amino acid found naturally in certain foods has been shown to break down dental plaque which will help millions of people avoid cavities and gum disease. Another reason to make sure you take particular care of your oral health while dieting! This doesn’t mean you have to eat anything particularly naughty to incorporate carbohydrates into your healthier diet. Raw vegetables, fresh fruit, and a little brown bread, brown rice or pasta, will give you the carbs you need to freshen your breath without damaging your diet intentions. Dr Katz discusses what to look out for, and how to tackle bad odour as a result of dieting. Further details attached for your reference.

Below are some sure fire ways for keeping your breath smelling sweet all the time, put together by bad breath guru and founder of The Breath Co, Dr Harold Katz.

· Drink more water, keeping your mouth hydrated will instantly improve your breath.

· Natural breath fresheners include mint, parsley or other greens, cloves, cinnamon, and fennel seeds – try adding these to your food!

· Eat a few healthy carbs to keep your diet balanced. A small about of wholegrains, fruit and veg really won’t affect your weight loss, but it will have a big impact on your breath and overall health!

· Skip the cup of coffee: Coffee (with or without caffeine) contains high levels of acids which cause the bacteria to reproduce more rapidly and create a bitter taste and bad breath for many people (virtually any acidic type of food or drink will do this). Tea is a much better alternative.

· Brush your teeth (and tongue) twice a day with The Breath Co. Fresh Breath Fluoride Toothpaste in Mild Mint (£8.99), and then rinse with The Breath Company Oral Rinse (£12.00) which is available in Icy Mint or Mild Mint.

· To clean your tongue, put a little bit of The Breath Co. toothpaste on your tongue-scraper or toothbrush and gently clean the surface of your tongue. Allow the gel to sit on the surface of the tongue, as this allows the oxygenating compounds of the tooth gel to penetrate below the surface of your tongue and destroy the bacteria breeding below the surface.

· Regularly use The Breath Company Mouth Wetting Dry Mouth Lozenges (£8.99). These unique sugar free lozenges restore fresh breath instantly.

The Breath Company is also offering 1/3 off of selected products in its range up to and including Tuesday 29th August 2017. A summary of the savings on each product are below.

IS YOUR BIKINI DIET GIVING YOU BAD BREATH?

If you are one of the many trying to lose a few extra pounds before slipping into that bikini this summer, then cutting back on carbohydrates, eating a high-protein diet, fasting, or even cutting out meat has probably crossed your mind.
However, as well as not being the best long term weight loss plan, crash dieting, fasting, and low carbohydrate diets can also have nasty side-effects, one of the most common of which is bad breath.
Founder of The Breath Company, Dr Harold Katz (also known as the ‘Bad Breath Guru’ in the US), discusses what to look out for, and how to tackle bad odour as a result of dieting.

Bad breath from Ketosis

One of the reasons that cutting down on carbohydrates when dieting is so popular, is that we start to burn more fat quite quickly. This process generates molecules called ketones. Unfortunately the body gets rid of a type of ketone called acetone, via both urine and the breath, which is often described as smelling ‘like rotten fruit’.
The good news is that if you have ‘ketosis breath’ it isn’t permanent. With the right treatment and a balanced approach to dieting, most people find it subsides after a few weeks, or months.

Ammonia breath from a high protein diet

When the body metabolises protein, it produces ammonia as a result. So when a diet consists mainly of high-protein meals, there tends to be increased ammonia in the breath or urine. If this increases a large amount, the odour can be quite bad.
Our bodies mainly use protein to maintain and build muscles, and will then convert any excess to energy, which is when the additional ammonia is produced (this also happens when fasting or long periods of exercise when the body relies on breaking down muscles for energy if it runs out of sources of fats and/or carbohydrates).

It’s worth also noting that dieters who are eating too little protein can also get ‘ketobreath’ which is a result of the body cannibalising its own muscle protein. Similarly, fasting and extremely low fat diets (which can cause loss of lean muscle) can also generate extremely offensive breath.
Above all, don’t let problems with your breath let you fall-off the diet wagon if it is improving your health.

Instead, try to figure out the cause of the offensive breath and tackle it using the following tips:

 Drink more water, keeping your mouth hydrated will instantly improve your breath  Natural breath fresheners include mint, parsley or other greens, cloves, cinnamon, and fennel seeds – try adding these to your food!  Eat a few healthy carbs to keep your diet balanced. A small about of wholegrains, fruit and veg really won’t affect your weight loss, but it will have a big impact on your breath and overall health!  Skip the cup of coffee: Coffee (with or without caffeine) contains high levels of acids which cause the bacteria to reproduce more rapidly and create a bitter taste and bad breath for many people (virtually any acidic type of food or drink will do this).
