Six of the best science books for children for Christmas
Cram Christmas stockings with the stories of Women in Science to inspire girls and boys with tales of female science pioneers who changed the world; snuggle up with a hot chocolate and take a 350-million-mile journey with Curiosity, the story of an intrepid Mars Rover; or keep little visitors busy with the fascinating, mind-bending tricks from Optical Illusions.
These are just some of the six science books shortlisted for this year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize, to be enjoyed by girls and boys this Christmas.
UK publishers submitted their best science books for under-14s to the 2018 Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize, with an adult judging panel narrowing them down to the six best books for the young panel to choose the winner from. The young judging panel is made up of schools, science centres, reading clubs, community groups, scouts and brownies from across the country. The winner will be announced on 15 November 2018 at a ceremony hosted by CBBC’s Katie Thistleton at the W5 Science & Discovery Centre in Belfast.
Chair of the 2018 judges, Professor Yadvinder Malhi FRS, said: “The process of shortlisting the books was fascinating. It was wonderful to see the range of new children’s science books coming out, and I enlisted the help of a neighbour and about ten children, marshalled by my twelve-year old daughter, in whittling down my personal list of favourites. The books that really stood out for me were those that tried something different, that engaged the reader in a different way or presented the science on a topic that is rarely engaged with in children’s science books.”
Here’s what the young judges had to say about the shortlisted books:
Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover by Markus Motum (Publisher Walker Studio)
Thomas Hawkins-Jackson, Age 10, “It was a really good book because it tells you about a Mars Rover and I have never read anything about that before. In fact, I didn’t even know about them before!”
Lucy, Age 11, “I thought this book was AMAZING….I love how it was written like the rover was telling the story. I thought the Rover had feelings.”
Exploring Space by Martin Jenkins, illustrated by Stephen Biesty (Publisher Walker Books)
Annabelle, Age 9, “Lots of reading to do, but brilliant detail in the pictures and descriptions. It will give me so much more to learn about. It is a book that goes into a lot more detail on how things actually work and how they are made. I think it will answer a lot of the questions I have about Space and no doubt give me more ideas for future questions to ask.”
Rory, Age 8, “I liked the book because it was easy to read and understand. It had everything about space from voyager 1 to the planet Venus. I really enjoyed it.”

Tom, Age 10, “I liked that this book didn’t just have the obvious dinosaurs, it has lots of new ones, it’s very up to date. There are still lots of surprising new facts even if you’re a dinosaur expert.”

Myles, Age 10, “This was my favourite. I really enjoyed the illusions in there and I found it interesting doing the examples in the book.”
Annabelle, Age 9, “This was amazing, I liked the cover and the wheel you could turn. I couldn’t ‘see’ some of them, but I will keep trying! I found it very strange how your eyes and mind can play tricks on you and I liked the way the book explains how your eye works with your brain.”
Scientist Academy by Steve Martin, illustrated by Essi Kimpimäki (Publisher Ivy Kids)
Hannah, Age 8, “I just love science so this was awesome. I wish there really was a scientist academy that I could go to.”
Annabelle, Age 9, “I loved this book, it was easy to read and light to hold, with a soft cover. I loved the fact it showed a selection of Women & Men in the Science roles and explained actually what they do. The detail is great on the job files and the pictures are very good. I LOVE the lay out and that you can work through the chapters with a sticker reward at the end. The experiments you can do at home are brilliant and I will be using these to learn new things with my education at home. This book puts the fun into Fiction, you can read it and experience it. It is more than just a book, it’s an opportunity to learn hands on too. It will be great for everyone, especially those who might not be big readers as they won’t be put off by pages & pages of text & they can join in the experiments and learn about the actual hands on Science too. Luca, Age 12, “It promotes the fact that women have generally been overlooked and not recognised in science, it helps the reader realise how much of an impact women have had in science. It is amazing to see how women have impacted our world.”
Harmony, Age 11, “My favourite book had to be ‘Women in Science’ by Rachel Ignotofsky. It was an easy read, beautifully illustrated and packed with lots of information. I learnt so much about female contribution to the scientific world. One profile that has stuck with me was about Marie Curie, who died from radiation poisoning after years of exposure. Women have been involved in curing Leprosy, Polio, studying the brain and mathematicians. It’s great that there is finally a book that tells the story of women who practically changed the world. I never knew about half of these women, I only really knew about Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and Isaac Newton and this book opened me up to more. I am so glad I got my hands on this book.”

This year, these inspirational stories are told in the record holder’s own words, as their Big Dreams landed them a coveted spot in the Big Book.
Amongst the record-breaking superstars revealed are:
BETTY GOEDHART – Oldest performing flying trapeze artist – 84 years, 249 days
Betty Goedhart, now 85, from California, USA, has flown her way into the record books with the Oldest performing flying trapeze artist (female) title – an amazing example of not letting your age get in the way of accomplishing your dreams. From a young age, Betty has always believed that she could accomplish anything with hard work and determination – which is why she began trapeze classes at the age of 78.
TOM BAGNALL – Fastest speed in a jet-propelled go-kart – 112.29mph
Tom Bagnall 26, from Staffordshire, UK, is the proud owner of the world’s fastest jet-propelled go-kart. This project took Tom 12 months to complete but his love of speed began at a young age and, in his own words, became an addiction. He had taken an interest in engineering and tinkering away with mechanics in his workshop late into the night. Tom’s mantra is to take the slow and mundane, and supercharge them to achieve the fastest speeds possible, and with his jet-propelled go-kart, he has made a record-breaking start.
BARRY JOHN CROWE – Most sausages produced in one minute – 78
Butcher, Barry John Crowe 28, from Cavern, Ireland, currently holds the record for the Most sausages produced in a minute. At just 10 years old, Barry began helping his parents in the family’s butchers shop and has been perfecting his sausage-making skills ever since. Barry now runs the family business and dreams that he’ll make his parents proud. He credits his parents for instilling the confidence that remains with him today – allowing him to create an impressive range of 36 different sausage types, even including some of the chocolate chip and honey comb variety.
FEATHER – Highest jump by a dog – 191.7cm
Feather’s talents became apparent when her owner, Samantha Valle (31) from Maryland, US, saw her jump so high that she hit their basement ceiling! Samantha began training Feather to jump over hurdles and within no time at all, a 150cm jump was effortless. Feather was adopted from a rescue centre and Samantha takes great pride in seeing the promise in animals that others have left behind and trying to bring out the best in them, “Sometimes it takes a certain person to come along and see the potential in a dog to make them even greater” she says.
GERONIMO – Most double dutch-style skips by a dog in one minute – 128
Geronimo was also rescued and rehomed by Samantha. A female Border Collie and Kelpie cross, Geronimo is the owner of a big personality and a GWR title for the Most double dutch-style skips by a dog in one minute. After six weeks, Samantha had an idea to add a skipping rope into the mix when Geronimo was proving difficult to train – it soon became clear that Geronimo was a complete natural.
ELIZABETH BOND – Largest knitting needles – 4.4m long
Artist, Betsy, 31 from Wiltshire, UK has created the incredible 4m long knitting needles. Surprisingly, Betsy isn’t an avid knitter but created the needles as part of an art exhibition. As part of fulfilling a long-held dream of returning to education to study art, Betsy wanted to attract attention to her exhibitions and set her sights on the Largest knitting needles GWR title to do so. By showcasing exactly what art students can accomplish, she was immensely proud to achieve her record and spark lots of conversation amongst her peers, she says “Everybody has potential if you just keep striving and pushing forward. Give it a go, what’s the worst that can happen?”
SUMIKO IWAMURO – Oldest professional club DJ – 83 years, 188 days
A restaurant owner and cook by day, by night, Sumiko Iwamura (83 from Tokyo, Japan) transforms into rock-star DJ Sumirock. After her shift at the restaurant, Sumiko makes her way to Decabar Z for her DJ slot, but she’s having too much fun to be tired, “doing something totally different is energising” she says. Sumiko never imagined becoming a DJ at this age, but since Sumirock’s debut she hasn’t looked back, she says “try something and don’t give up… there are opportunities lying around every corner”.
MATT DENTON – Largest rideable hexapod robot – 2.8m tall, 5m wide
Matt Denton, 45, from Winchester, UK, is an Animatronic Control System Specialist and holds the GWR title for the Largest rideable hexapod robot. Matt’s love of animatronics and engineering began at a very young age, when he received his very first LEGO technic kit and was cemented after a trip to the cinema to see Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when he was eight years old. Matt’s spent his younger years fascinated with walking machines like the AT-AT’s and fulfilled a childhood dream when he had the chance to work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens to create the fan-favourite, BB-8.
