Mitcham & Carshalton Rugby Club received another huge boost of support this week as they not only welcomed touring International Rugby Club, Facultad de Ingeneria del la Universidad de Buenos Aires (FIUBA), but were also visited by the Mayor of Sutton, Steve Cook.
Aware of the clubs recent improvement programme, Mr Cook met with members of Mitcham and FIUBA following the match, where they discussed the club, the tour and how it came about. Both sides were also gifted with a Sutton plaque, commemorating the event.
Mitcham were bested on the day by a well drilled and athletic FIUBA with the score finishing 50-5. Despite Mitcham enjoying a large share of possession, FIUBA’s clinical performance in the backs meant they were able to make significance gains from the wide positions. Man of the Match was awarded to lifelong member of the club Ian “Magoo” McAra.
Following the game, Mitcham presented FIUBA with a commemorative tankard and in return were gifted with a commemorative plaque. Mitcham Co-Chair, Keir Waller expressed his joy in the success of the day.
“We believe this is the first tour Mitcham have hosted from the Americas and it was an absolute delight to have them. They’re a great bunch of lads and we wish them the best of luck in the rest of the season ad their UK tour.
Saturday was all about two countries coming together, sharing cultures and celebrating the sport that we love. This has been a highlight this year and we welcome any touring rugby to visit Mitcham where they can experience some of the best hospitality South London has to offer!”
Mitcham’s next game is against a far more local side, Racal Decca away on the 23rd March.
